No idea why, it just ends up that way. The other day I caught myself actually thinking this year would be different. As it turns out, it’s not different.

But hey, there’s something to be said for predictability, right?

La Rêve Élélementaire, by J. Staggering

Actual comment from a CNN.com article on the budget stalemate in Congress:

“part of the reason that the top 1% has so much wealth is nanny state mentality that the democrats are pushing on us. Get rid of that and the wealth will spread out more.”

I just… I mean, how do you respond to something like this?

Kurt Vonnegut's rules for writing, reprinted from r/writing

Kurt Vonnegut's rules for writing, reprinted from r/writing:
wilwheaton:

Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

Every sentence must do one of two things—reveal character or advance the action.

Start as close to the end as possible.

Be a sadist. No matter sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

The discussion at Reddit that goes with this is illuminating, and worth your time.

1 oz gin (I like Martin Miller, Westbourne Strength)

1 oz Grand Marnier

1 oz Cocchi Americano

1 oz lemon juice

1 or 2 drops absinthe or pastis (I like Lucid Absinthe)

Combine, shake with lots of ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with either a slice of lemon peel or a cherry (I’ve used both).

Enjoy!

La Meule de Foin, by J. It echoes from every dismal reaching corner of the abyss, and whispers of the aching loneliness within the crevasse. A cold, blue-white light transcends an aura of weird lifelessness to the jagged rocks of the cleft walls. There appears a soul within all of this, like a thin frail mist, congealing within its center — a tiny translucent gray cloud.”

- Ralph Kenyon, 1962

Chiles, Pike Place Market, Seattle

Chiles, Pike Place Market, Seattle

Les trois Grâces by Jean-Jacques Pradier, Louvre

Les trois Grâces by Jean-Jacques Pradier, Louvre

Eye to the sky.

Eye to the sky.

"Inside every cynical person, there is a disappointed idealist."

“Inside every cynical person, there is a disappointed idealist.”

- George Carlin

"We despise all reverences and all objects of reverence which are outside the pale of our list of..."

““We despise all reverences and all objects of reverence which are outside the pale of our list of sacred things and yet, with strange inconsistency, we are shocked when other people despise and defile the things which are holy for us.””

- Mark Twain
